Vacation, Rest, and Life: Making Rest a Priority

“I need a vacation!” We utter these words in frustration and fatigue. Yet after we get back from vacation we say, “I need a vacation from my vacation.” Perhaps it isn’t a vacation we really need. Maybe what we need is to work rest into our natural rhythm of life. And I already hear your excuses. “But I am a mom and I have these crazy kids who keep me busy.” “But I can’t rest or my house will be a wreck and I will never get the promotion.” Our culture equates busy-ness with success. If we are not running …

Feasting on God’s Word

“I don’t like food; I LOVE it. If I don’t love it, I don’t swallow!”  -Anton Ego Ratatouille I am not as fastidious as Anton Ego and his love for good food. But I have noticed something about my appetite. The more I eat healthy food and drink water, the more I want healthy food and the less allure junk food holds. However, the more I eat junk the more I crave junk. And it isn’t only true in my physical appetites. It is true in how I treat the Word of God. When I get by on a steady diet …

Giving Myself an F in Mothering

“There’s no bread, mom,” my daughter stated. Her eyes flashed with the question my brain didn’t know the answer to: What am I going to bring in my lunch today. “But…someone told me we had plenty of bread…That’s why I didn’t buy any.” My lame attempt at denying the fact we had no bread fell flat. My mind raced…. “Macaroni and cheese…yes we can make it and put it in the thermal containers you all have. Sounds good right?!” I turned so I couldn’t see any of my children’s answers and began filling a pan with hot water. I set …

A School Time Prayer

Father God, as I place my kids in the care of their school I pray Your hand of safety and guidance surround them. Help them to develop a love for learning. Give their teachers wisdom in how best to inspire a love for knowing. May their desire to know draw them closer to You. Father be with the other kids in their classes. May my kids be lights of encouragement to all the kids in their classes. Help them to treat others how they would want to be treated. May they point others to Your love and kindness. When they …

Rest for Today

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). Come. Don’t worry about your hair, your clothes, those dishes piled in the sink. Just come. Are your children are fighting you every step of the way? Come. Do you feel like all of your life is a battle? I have given you armor. I am your …

“What is…4×12?” the app asked my daughter. 48….I will her to answer correctly. “Absolutely brilliant! All your answers were correct!” And my heart longs to hear those words. “Absolutely brilliant! All your answers were correct! You are the best mom with the best kids in the world.” But, I wonder if I can even teach my kids their multiplication tables much less how to love God with their lives. I mean my seven-year-old still can’t tie his shoes! And, how on God’s lovely green earth do I teach my kids that they are not entitled to data phones or days …

A Cleaning Plan for the Cleaning Inept

I am not so great at keeping my house clean or organized. I want to have a clean and organized house, but things get in the way – things like children, my husband, our dogs, homeschool, and my classes. I am told that creative folks struggle with organization. That sounds like a good excuse too. I have even been known to blame my twin. She is more organized than two people need to be, and so I think she stole my organizing gene in the womb. Honestly, cleaning and organizing can feel overwhelming! I feel like I will never get …

Faith in Darkness and Light

I often wonder what this day was like for the disciples. Jesus – their teacher, leader, Messiah – was dead. The earth hadn’t shaken yet, and the stone was still firmly in place. I wonder if they felt betrayed, lost, confused, scared. They were huddled together on Sunday, but did they isolate themselves on Saturday? There was no hint that they remembered Jesus’s words – those that promised He would rise again, that this was not the end. I’m guessing it felt like the end. And moms there are times in our lives that everything around us looks hopeless. Times …
