Faith in Darkness and Light

Spread the love

darkness 2

I often wonder what this day was like for the disciples.

Jesus – their teacher, leader, Messiah – was dead.

The earth hadn’t shaken yet, and the stone was still firmly in place. I wonder if they felt betrayed, lost, confused, scared. They were huddled together on Sunday, but did they isolate themselves on Saturday?

There was no hint that they remembered Jesus’s words – those that promised He would rise again, that this was not the end.

I’m guessing it felt like the end.

And moms there are times in our lives that everything around us looks hopeless. Times when God seems silent and there is no way out, no hope, no direction, nothing. When children wander from the faith, when drugs and alcohol grip tight, when relationships seem broken beyond repair, when the second line on the pregnancy test doesn’t show up or maybe it does…And it feels hopeless, it feels like it is the end.

But God.

Matthew 4:16 ESV “…the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”

God sees past our deepest desires, worst failures, and knows our greatest need. He sees our broken, helpless, overlooked selves and says, “I want them. I want her. I want you.”

And Jesus’ resurrection is coming. He will make all things right and there will be victory either in this life or the next. But sometimes God keeps us in the dark, like the disciples were on the Saturday before Easter. God keeps us there, and He encourages us to look for the light because His dawn is coming.

We just have to trust in Him and His nearness even in the dark.

What are you praying for in the darkness? Can we pray for you?
