Living With Blinders

Like a horse with blinders on, I put one foot in front of the other, doing the next thing, completely forgetting that there are things going on in the periphery. I tend to live my life this way. It’s my default. If I am not intentional about noticing things around me, I will continue “getting things done” and miss what is past the blinders.      The problem is: the important things are in the periphery.    Directly in front of me is the giant pile of laundry, last night’s dishes that still smell like salmon, beds that haven’t been …

When Your Kids Have Good Ideas…

It happens in parenthood. Sometimes our kids jog us from our comfort zones, and I don’t know about you, but it always takes me by surprise. One of the things I wish I’d put into practice more as a younger mom, (and honestly, I’m still learning), is to be quicker to listen and slower to speak when they had ideas. “Hey mom, you wanna play Barbies with me?” “No, mommy’s doing dishes.” “Hey mama, let’s go to the park.” “No, I just got out of the shower.” “I have an idea! Let’s make brownies!” “Not right now, okay? I’m busy.” …

What did I do before Facebook

What did I do before Facebook?

As a Women’s Ministry Director for nearly a decade, I’ve watched big trends in the lives of women over the last ten years. Communication and technology are in over-drive when it comes to the pace of change. It has been so fast that we’ve have barely had time to stop and learn, much less reflect on how it’s impacting our lives. Social media and our technology habits have changed women personally, as wives and as moms. Family life is different now. It often takes a crisis, power outage, vacation, illness, honest friend, or the Holy Spirit to slow us down …

How to Start the New Year Right

Goodbye, 2013.  Hello, 2014.  For some people, today is a day of making new year resolutions. A time of promising to do better…to lose weight…to eat healthier…to read God’s word every day…to forgive that person you’ve struggled to forgive.  For years, I have made these types of resolutions, only to find myself in exactly the same place one year later. Still not healthier. Still not in the Word daily. And still the exact same person I was one year prior.  It’s not the resolutions that are the problem, of course, but the person who fails to keep them.  This year, …
