Fill Your Mind with Him

“Fill your mind with the thought that God is there.  And once your mind is truly filled with that thought, when you experience difficulties it will be as easy as breathing for you to remember, my heavenly Father knows all about this.  Therefore, you can rest in perfect confidence in Him.” –Oswald Chambers I found this quote many years ago and it has remained one of my most favorite quotes.  As a mom when I am going about my day, doing what moms do, I often find myself sinking into a hole of pity and despair.  Life is overwhelming. Kids …

A Mother’s Song of Praise

I’ve always loved the prayer Mary prayed after she visited her cousin Elizabeth and revealed the secret that would change the world, she was carrying in her womb the Son of God, the Messiah, the one who would save us from our sins. When I read Luke 1:46-56 I imagine Mary in such a humbled state yet not able to contain her excitement and fear for her future as the mother of the promised one.  I can see her dancing as she sings, kneeling as she prays and lifting her hands towards Heaven in worship.  I just cannot imagine …

Thankful to be a Mom

Lord, Today I am thankful for my life as a mom.  It isn’t the life I planned. Proverbs 16:9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” You brought me a godly husband I don’t deserve. Psalm 1:1, Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked; nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.” You set aside my prayers for success & fame and gave me a houseful of children. Psalm 128:3, Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; …

The Making of a Man Starts with a Samurai Sword

It was a stare down between me and my 13 year old son.  I was right and he knew it, but he wanted to be right so badly he was willing to stand eye to eye with me(because he is as tall as I am), giving me his “I think I am smarter than you” glare.  Have you been there? I am no stranger to this.  I have been there 3 times before with his older brothers. The early teen years for a boy can be brutal on parents and for the boy.  So much is going on in the …

To the Mom Who is Barely Hanging On

When I was a young girl, all I wanted to be when I grew up was a mom.  While my friends were making plans to have a career or be someone famous, I day dreamed of being a mom and what my family would look like.  We would have the perfect house complete with a white picket fence.  I would drive a minivan and volunteer for local charities. I would greet my husband at the door every evening with a kiss after his long hard day at work.  I would have a girl and a boy (because isn’t …

Are You Too Busy?

I heard myself say it to my friend, and at the time I believed it, but I knew reality was much different. “When things settle down, we can have lunch.”  The truth is, things never really settle down.  There are always a thousand things going on at once. That is just my life.  But for some reason I always think things are about to settle down and my life will slow down. I’m a mom.  What makes me think life will ever slow down? I don’t think it really matters how many kids you have, the life of a mom …

That Gigantic 3 Letter Word…JOY

Her words broke my heart.  I wanted to cry as I listened to her pour out her raw feelings to me. “I’ve lost my joy and I don’t know how to get it back.” This sweet mom was hurting in her marriage.  She and her husband needed help.  She didn’t enjoy being married to him.  She didn’t like the kind of mom she had become and she craved joy. What is it about this little word that when it is missing we seem to just exist through life?  What is so important about this 3 letter word? I understand where …

5 Lessons Learned in the Emergency Room

Last week was the 3rd time we had to take our baby to the ER since January 1st.  Never have we been to the ER so many times with one child. Poor little Charlie,  he has had a very sick winter with RSV, stomach bug, respiratory infection and whatever else a baby can catch this time of year. Last week, he dislocated his elbow.  HOW?  I have no clue, but he did. Actually I did it, but don’t know how.   So, needless to say I am learning some new things thanks to all of these trips to the ER. Always take …

Connecting with their Learning Styles

A few years ago, during one of my more challenging homeschooling days with my kids, the Lord showed me a scripture verse that has stuck with me. “Then the Lord looked over all he had made and he saw that it was excellent in every way.” Genesis 1:31  I wondered, does this mean that my kids are excellent?  I have to be honest here, I really had not thought of my kids as excellent.  After all, they were making my day very difficult.  I looked at the scripture again and knew it was true, my kids were excellent.  I just …

By His Spirit

Lately my days have been spent mostly rocking a feverish baby, wiping snotty noses and trying to grab a few moments of sleep when I can. The winter colds have hit our house pretty hard and this Momma is tired. Even with sick kids, it is hard for me to just sit during the day.  My mind begins to go over all that I need to be doing but can’t. While I’m rocking the baby I think about the laundry that still needs to be washed or the emails I haven’t answered yet. When the baby  finally goes to sleep …
