5 Tips to Fight Your Back-to-School Worries

Spread the love

If your like me, for many reasons summer is my favorite time of the year. I get to spend uninterrupted time with my kiddos. I get to hit the beach with my family and take other mini vacations. And, I get to sleep in on some of those extra special days.

As a former high school and middle school teacher, I really needed my summers to rest both mentally and physically. For me, summer has always been a time for rejuvenation, rest and a whole lot of fun! It’s been a time away from work to think, pray and spend time with my family.

This year my daughter enters 6th grade, her last year of elementary school. I am happy for her to grow into the little lady of God she is becoming, yet I can’t help but be a little sad inside. She is my last baby to grow up and head into that crazy time of life called middle school mayhem.

One million worries pop into my head. Will she have a good teacher? Will she make the right friends who know God and aren’t pressured by worldly things? Will she pray when things are hard and turn to God? Will she know that her identity is in Christ and not in her math test scores that she struggles with so much? Will she know that no matter what others think or say to her or about her, it’s the truth that God speaks to her spirit that truly matters? And the questions go on and on…

I know you’re a worrier like me, sweet friend. So, let’s remember a few things that God has taught us to combat our back-to-school worries.

  1. Only entertain today’s problems. Worry can take over if you don’t limit it to one day’s struggles. (Matthew 6:34 NIV ) “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it’s own.”
  2. Worrying adds so much stress to our lives and truly is not healthy for our hearts or our mental health. “Who of you by worrying can add a single day to your life?” (Luke 12:25 ESV).
  3. Focus and hold onto the peace God gives you in your heart. And don’t let fear rule your life for one tiny little moment. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27 ESV).
  4. Give your burdens to the Lord. Don’t rely on yourself or others to fix your worries, but give them to the Lord instead. “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22 ESV).
  5. Focus on the good things in your life. Focus on God’s good words and his words of truth. “Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers him up” (Proverbs 12:25 NLT).

Think of the common saying you are what you eat. Now instead change it to: YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK. We become exactly what we choose to think about. Our actions emulate our thought life. So be careful to guard your thoughts too.

Sweet friend, I hope these tips will help you to not worry so much about the upcoming school year and your precious babes.
