If ever there was a Matriarch of matriarchs, certainly it would be Eve. Yet Scripture tells us little about this woman from whom we can learn so much.

“And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.” Genesis 3:20 (NKJV)

Eve means Life-giver.

How ironic that the woman who opened death’s door for the whole human race would be graced with a name that means life-giver.

The grace we find in Eve’s name is a sweet reminder to all of us who have failed God that, because of Christ, our identity is no longer forever linked to what we have done but, instead, for who we are in Jesus!

Let’s take a look at three lessons we can learn from Eve’s life. Lessons that will not only challenge us, but also change us!

1. We Need To Protect Ourselves from Deception (Guard Your Heart!)

We need protection from deception ladies. It was Eve who was deceived and it was Eve who was targeted. Perhaps the enemy thought if he could get to Eve he could then get to Adam.

The enemy of your soul is also the enemy of your family.

There’s just too much at stake for you and I not to guard our hearts!

Eve made three mistakes that fateful and fatal day:

  • Eve never should have entertained a conversation with the enemy of her soul.
  • Eve should have run to God, sought His will, His ways, and His Word.
  • Eve should have talked to her husband before she did something so foolish.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) warns us to, Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” And as your life goes…so goes the life of your loved ones.

2. We Need Not Mother Alone

Eve had no point of reference as to what it meant to be a wife, mom, or woman. No childhood memories of baking bread with her mom, no friends to call, no good or bad examples to learn from.

Eve was the only mother who has ever had to mother alone. Yet, she is not the only mother who has. Eve didn’t have a choice. You and I do.

Titus 2:3-5 tells us that our lives are to be linked with one another. God created us for community and we need each other!

Motherhood may have been a solo journey for Eve, but it wasn’t meant to be that way for the rest of us. May we learn from Eve that we need each other, that God created us for community, and that we really are BETTER TOGETHER.

3. We Need to Know that God Redeems Our Losses

In Genesis 4:8-12 we read the encounter with Cain and Abel and how Cain killed his brother because he was jealous.

In one blow, she lost both of her sons. One to death and one to the consequences of his own sin.

No mother should have to bury her child! The loss of a child is not something a mother ever gets over. Perhaps you’re reading this right now and you are so painfully aware of how true that is! My heart hurts for you and with you sweet mom!

But then we read this in Genesis 4:25-26 (NKJV)…

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.”

Interestingly enough, Seth’s name means “COMPENSATION” Perhaps she felt like he would somehow compensate for her loss, yet knowing nothing ever could.

Another child could never replace them. But God didn’t replace her loss, He redeemed it.

Only God can make beauty out of ashes. Only God can heal the broken hearted! Only God can make sense of what doesn’t make sense at all.

Today, if you have suffered loss… any kind of loss… if you have broken places in your life…. will you give those losses and those broken places in your life over to God and allow Him to do what He alone can do?

He redeems our losses!
