Breaking Bread on Christmas

Spread the love

Eating with family and friends is such a great tradition and a huge part of what makes Christmas day so special. But did you know that breaking bread with others has a lot to do with Jesus?

In Matthew 9:10 NIV, Jesus had dinner at Matthew’s house, “with many tax collectors and sinners …and his disciples.”

He also ate with His disciples at the Last Supper. Jesus took the opportunity to eat and have conversations with both followers and sinners together.

This gives us an opportunity to invite people over to our homes at Christmas who may not have anywhere else to go, or to invite people over who don’t know Jesus.

And even if you don’t have any guests or non-believers at your Christmas feast, what a wonderful time to focus on Christ’s birth with your family, not just by gift giving. Use the time to pray together, to give thanks at supper, to read scripture about Christ’s birth and to sing carols like Silent Night or Away in the Manger.

This year at our large Dillaberry Christmas gathering, we will not only share in gift giving, but will showcase each families’ talent while sharing a piece of music, scripture, poem, piece of art, or another talent that focuses on Christ’s birth. We will break bread and pray together too. I can’t wait!

What will you do to make Christmas day special this year and focus on Christ’s birth?
