11 Shows I Wouldn’t Let My Children Watch

“I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.” Psalm 101:3 (NIV)

Have you noticed how crude, crass and blatantly corrupt television shows have become?

There’s almost nothing worth watching these days… especially for kids.

Back in the day, writers of television shows focused on writing scripts that promoted morals, doing the right thing, consequences to misbehavior, patriotism. Television shows that embraced truth, faith, courage, integrity, civil service, and hard work.

Today, scripts are basically the polar opposite. I know this may sound hard, but to be honest… most reality shows are raunchy and many of the television shows are trash.

So sweet moms, I’m putting it out there… laying it on the line. It may not be politically correct, but I’m going to share 11 shows I wouldn’t let my children watch. Shows that were seemingly created for kids… but aren’t even something adults should be watching.

It’s not just the sexual innuendoes, the foul language and the graphic violence. It’s the direction television has headed, the attitudes it perpetuates, and the behavior it endorses.

The mind is a terrible thing to fill with thoughts and images that will taint a person’s heart, cloud their perception of what is right and what is wrong, diminish their morals, and sear the conscience.

Television is a terrible excuse for a babysitter and an even worse excuse for parental bonding when a parent will compromise biblical convictions for the sake of hanging out with their kids.

There are a ton of shows I wouldn’t let my children watch because so much of TV is trash these, but today, I just want to share 11.

OH…and did I mention you may not agree with this list?

1. Pretty Little Liars –

There’s really nothing pretty about a liar. OH…I know it has been rated #1 but that may be why it’s #1 on my list. Pretty Little Liars creates a teen ‘norm’ that should not only not exist, but should also not be championed and validated. Teen sex, drinking, lying, cheating, stealing, homosexuality, disrespect of each other and of parents, gossip, backbiting, and a list of other unseemly behaviors are consistently paraded across the TV screen as ‘normal’ teen behavior.

2. The Vampire Diaries –

Really? Do vampires keep diaries? It’s basically a soap opera for teens created in the context of a dark, supernatural drama where human life is insignificant, foul language is mainstream, paranormal activity is embraced, and vampires are made to seem sexy. This show (and shows like it) make the paranormal seem normal. Hmmm…that might explain the guy with fangs who worked in the produce department of the local grocery store.

3. Family Guy –

It’s just bad. Really bad! Lots of vulgar, explicit, ungodly content that was written to make people laugh. Unfortunately, it’s a cartoon and cartoons have a tendency to draw a child’s attention and there’s absolutely nothing cute or funny about laughing at sin and teaching our children that it’s okay to laugh at the very things that grieve the heart of God.

4. The Secret Life of the American Teenager –

It was reportedly going to be titled The Sex Life of the American Teenager and its content lives up to that name. Along with the very inappropriate language and content, each scene is threaded throughout with sex. In one show, the supposedly Christian character, Grace tells a classmate, “I can no longer wait, because I need sex. I want sex. I feel like having sex! And you know what? Those feelings come from love. And God is love. And I feel sure that God is OK with me making love!”

5. South Park –

If you’ve seen the commercials, you know exactly why this show is on this list. Vulgar, irreverent, politically and liberally driven, and a show that is definitely not something parents should allow their children to watch or watch with them.

6. Adventure Time –

A cartoon that focuses on the main characters fighting off demons, dealing with psychotic behavior. It doesn’t contain any valuable content and it’s definitely not a show for children.

7. Johnny Bravo –

Johnny Bravo is a womanizing thug who diminishes and disrespects women and consistently sexualizes every other conversation. Not something our children need to be watching. No “bravo” from me for Johnny Bravo.

8. The Bachelor –

I know that might break your momma heart not to watch that show, but it’s really pretty much like a modern day harem that the world gets to watch. The Bachelor is not the view of love we want our children to embrace. It’s not a normal portrait of how to find love, show love, keep love of be loved.

9. TMZ/Access Hollywood/etc… –

So, I couldn’t list just one of these types of shows because, while they can be entertaining, they freakishly focus on the lives of the rich and famous. Shows like TMZ and Access Hollywood not only advocate their bizarre, bad, and ungodly behavior of the Hollywood elite, they also embrace them. Children love to follow the stars. But the stars don’t always live lives worth following. So, it’s not that I wouldn’t ever let my children watch these shows, but I would do my best to find something better for my kids to do when they were on.

10. Modern Family –

It may be modern, but it’s not a good representation of ‘family’ and it’s definitely not something children should consider as normal. Filled with crass talk, inappropriate relationships, and a homosexual couple that has adopted a child, Modern Family balks at what a family is really all about. Biblically, marriage is to be a picture of Christ and the church and lines up with Scripture. Watching shows that mock what God established to be one husband and one wife for life is not a good investment in our children’s hearts.

11. Mom –

With a title like Mom, you would think this one would be safe. But no! Not in a culture where vulgarity rules, sex sells, traditional family is mocked, and it’s cool for a woman to be crass. Moms struggle to be the best they can be and this show has a great opportunity to still be funny and encourage and empower moms to step into their roles with faith, courage, integrity, class, and a lot of humor. Mom blows it with moms and could learn a lot for the movie Moms Night Out. Just sayin’!

That’s my list of eleven. What’s yours?
