Psalms and Cell Phones?

Spread the love

Today I am so happy to share with you my precious partner in ministry, Bonnie Wallace. She is so gracious to work alongside me, in whatever way I need. She does it with a smile; expecting nothing in return. Listen to the wise words from this beautiful mother of 5.  Lynn Cowell

…be filled by the Spirit: speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music from your heart to the Lord, Ephesians 5:18-19

I am a mama of five and I have four older teens living in my home.  I’ve been training my children in God’s Word their whole lives and they know where I stand.  After years of teaching, my words can fall on deaf ears.  Those darling teens roll their eyes and mentally “check out” from conversation.

God tells us we are to speak to our children in Psalms and spiritual hymns.

Psalms give us an opportunity to express feelings of repentance or praise, doubt or faith, anger or calm, sorrow or joy, through a relationship with God.   He engages us to submit to one another, promote His glory, and give praise.  Jesus becomes both a person and an idea. Psalms refresh us and help us to know God is for us and working in every detail of our lives.

Psalms allow me to sing God’s Word from my heart to my children’s.   Sometimes, in order to be heard, I must meet them where they are and it’s here, that I use social media to reach their hearts for God’s advantage.  It might sound hard but with just a few strokes on the key pad, we can easily speak these God-inspired words of instruction and affection into our children’s lives.

Here is an example of using Psalms 1:1-3 to speak truth into your child:

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,

You are blessed when you don’t participate with ungodly friends.

Take advice from Godly people.

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

God’s Word brings joy.

Take time out to think about God.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

You are chosen.

You’re right where God wants you.

You’re in a good place.

God will equip you.

He will give what you need.

God has purpose.

He will strengthen you.

God will benefit you.

God is for you.

He is working it out for good.

God gives fruit (reward) at the right time.

Small deeds last.

The Truths from Psalms give me self-control and good judgment when I speak to my children.

God tells me not to be reckless with my words and there have been conversations where I’ve had to take a deep breath, bite my tongue, and let it go.  I often pray for, and think of, those awesome kids when they are not around and sometimes I want to reach them where they are  – in school, at the ball field, or hanging out with friends. Social media gives me the gift of time with an opportunity to double my diligence in giving them affection and instruction.

I will never believe that cell phones and computers are better than the face-to-face time spent with our children, but I believe it is a tool that can be used for God’s glory.  And for those whose children do not have cell phones? A note with a written encouragement from psalms is a great alternative to slip under a door, slide into a school book, or tuck in a backpack.
