My Embarrassing Mama Moment

Spread the love

“Here Mom, I have no where to put this.”

I dutifully held out my hand to receive my child’s ABC (already been chewed) gum. His chubby little fingers deposited the wet slimy substance into my open palm. I recall feeling grateful my waiting hand did not receive a direct deposit from his mouth.

“Thanks, Mom!”

“No problem.”

I knew my role, I was,  The Garbage Mom. Rummaging through my handbag I found a loose tissue. Carefully, I wrapped the discarded gum into the Kleenex and tossed it into my purse while my son ran off to play.

“I’ll throw it away later,”

I had no where to put the gum. My purse is a black hole. Things go in and never seem to resurface.

My mind is like my purse. Details go into my short-term memory only to be forgotten.

My son’s discarded gum was out of sight and out of mind.

A week later, I attended my bible study class. My nose was getting a little runny and I needed to dab it. I found a semi-crumpled tissue from my purse. I dabbed my nose and sniffed. Suddenly I felt a huge obstruction in my left nostril. The forgotten wad of gum had popped right into my nose.

Have you ever tried to retrieve gum from your nose? I can tell you…it’s not easy. There’s no graceful way of getting it out.

My mind did an instant replay of an incident my two-year-old daughter had with a piece of ham.

“What’s in your nose?”

“My lunch,” was her response. She needed medical intervention to remove her lunch from her nose.

Oh!

There was no way I was going to the doctor with this malady. I wondered how many adults the pediatrician used that special hook on! I did not want to be the first.

I assessed the situation. I was seated in a tight circle of women. I realized climbing over everyone in order to escape to the restroom would only call attention to my predicament. Therefore, I took care of my problem the best and hopefully least conspicuous way I could.

I handled it the old fashion way.

The smell of cinnamon remained with me for most of the day. Each time I breathed in, I wondered how many people witnessed my unfortunate circumstance and questioned what I was doing.

“Here Mom.”

Being well-trained, I dutifully held out my hand to receive the most recent unwanted morsel.

“Thanks, Mom!”

“No problem.”

I dug through my purse to find something in which to put the item.

But…being a wiser and experienced, my next mission was to find the closest garbage can!

Our mouths were filled with laughter.
