Are you an Angela? Can you mentor?

Spread the love

Written by Heather Riggleman, Author of Mama Needs A Time Out

Several years ago, a girl wandered into an old downtown theater. She had been beaten down in life by poor choices and circumstances. Her young daughter and husband were threads holding her together and even then, it wasn’t enough to keep her from trying it end all again. But something had happened a few weeks before; in an emergency room as she was strapped to a hospital bed where she heard the voice of God. Since then she had been searching to encounter him again.

The front had been converted into a dental office while the back remained some semblance of the a theator with a large movie screen, `1950’s couches and booths were scattered about. What she saw surprised her and yet flooded her with a peace she didn’t understand. There couldn’t have been more than 30 college students there, all facing the stage as one played an electric piano and an two more on guitars. All were singing in unison to the  words on the screen.

By the time the night ended, the young girl who wandered in a stranger, met the maker of her soul and in the process, God provided a mentor. Angela was a pastor’s wife who had friended her. And over time, Angela invited her into her home, out to dinner, playdates and even a few coffee shop moments. Each time they met, Angela poured out God’s love and direction. And over time the the young woman began to change, becoming the mom and wife she was created to be. And that girl was me.

Angela’s friendship and mentoring not only changed me, but she reached our entire family! And this is what mentoring is about.

Mentoring sounds like an old fashioned word but it’s an age old calling that can change a nation–one heart at a time. In fact, one family at a time. And Jesus knew this. In his last few years as on this earth, Jesus poured himself into his disciples, he was their mentor. And here at The Mom Initiative, we’ve captured his calling and are taking outside church walls.

Check out the video and see mentoring is and what The Mom Initiative is about!
