The Smell of Freshly Sharpened Pencils

Ah, those never-ending summer days! When you’re young! The Bible says, “It’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it!” (Eccl. 11:9a TLB) And we did! Back in the old days…when I was young…there was no air conditioning for homes. No comfy indoor climate to entice us to be insiders. We were outsiders. We actually got exercise by running around playing tag, kick ball, or roller skating. We circled the neighborhood subdivision on our bikes until dark, and the bugs hit our teeth or our mothers rang a bell for us to come home. To cool ourselves, we played …

Planning Family Fun During the School Year

“And also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor – it is the gift of God” Ecclesiastes 3:13 NKJV The beginning of a new school year always scares me.  I like summer. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the lack of homework, and my children sleeping in. As summer draws to an end, the panic begins to rise. I dread the schedules, the rules, the expectations that come with a new school year. Not because they don’t all lead to good habits and things in my children’s future, but because it seems to …

Back to School Supply List

Back to School Supply List: 21 Resources

‘Tis the season for supply lists. Unfortunately, the back to school supply list can really add up! More than one mom has approached her homeschool list or classroom list with excitement, only to walk away with a grown up case of test anxiety. As a teacher and a mom, I want to encourage you to keep a few things in mind, if your list has you stressed. Your kids don’t need to have the latest and greatest option out there (= most expensive) If the list is long, prioritize what’s needed most (= a key life “lesson” for all of …

Easy Back to School Traditions

5 Easy Back-to-School Traditions

Today, I wanted to share a great re-post from last year by Lindsey Bell because SOME OF YOU have children who will be starting back to school tomorrow.  Soooo… whether you homeschool, your children are in public, private or virtual school, here are some great ideas to help you begin some back-to-school traditions. My oldest child begins kindergarten this month. (And yes, that is the sound of quiet crying you hear through your computer!)  Last year, when he began preschool, I wanted to make his first day special. What I didn’t want to do, though, was stress myself out. I …

A Letter to the Moms of Graduates

Hey Mom, Yeah, you. The one with the camera around your neck and the tissue in your purse. Your child is not so small anymore, is she? I see you watching her with a mixture of pride and sadness. It’s okay, to be both happy and sad all at the same time. Because this cap and gown that she’s wearing, it’s a wardrobe that reminds you that she’s growing up. Whether she’s about to go to first grade, or be a freshman in high school or leave home for college in the fall, she’s made it to this point, and all …

TherMOMeter: Setting The Temperature In Your Family

As a young mom, I had no idea that my mood could and would set the temperature for the entire house; actually I wasn’t aware yet, but I was the therMOMeter of my home. If I was in a bad mood, it eventually bled over and made everyone else have a bad mood too. My boys were little when I decided to test this idea out. I decided that no matter how I “felt” that day I would take a few notes and see how quickly my attitude started affecting how the kids (and even my husband) were behaving in …

cravings

I’m sitting in my office eating a tangerine. It’s citrus flavor is bright on my tongue this frigid winter day but what I really want is a warm cup of hot chocolate or the jar of Nutella in my desk snack drawer. I’m fighting the craving to eat right now and trying to consume this sacred opportunity to crave God instead.  It’s Thursday and quite frankly, this week has been long and full. School started back for my kiddos and we’ve had our share of tears this week. My girls switched tables at four year old preschool this week and …
