Scheduling: A Tool for Sanity

Subscribe today for your FREE copy of… FACING YOUR FEARS – 31 STORIES FROM M.O.M.     I look at my watch. 6:30 PM. Sigh. I don’t have dinner started, L needs to do eye therapy, E needs to study spelling words, and J needs a bath. And bedtime is supposed to be 8 PM. I felt like my mind was spinning out of control. My shoulders tensed, my heart rate doubled, and the inner voice started. Why can’t you get yourself together? Other moms homeschool and have dinner on the table at 5:00 PM. You …

Listen. What does your home say?

Subscribe today for your FREE copy of… FACING YOUR FEARS – 31 STORIES FROM M.O.M.       Every home talks. Above the din or kid tunes, toddler talk, tween laughter, and teenage tunes, homes speak. Despite all of the digital messages firing without pause, “home” still has the potential to resonate strong and true. Whether or not the sound is sweet or foul, our home will speak. What is your home saying? I was invited to a Christmas party at a house that could’ve swallowed 3 of our bungalow. Before I unbuckled my seat belt, …

Responding to Disasters

Every vacation has the potential for disaster. As a mom, every DAY has the potential for disaster!  Instead of being paralyzed or panicking, we can focus on what matters most in such moments and chalk it up as a “victory” for motherhood!  Here’s how to respond in a moment of mayhem. Half chewed blue gummy sharks flashed before my eyes and pooled into my lap, as my husband swerved to stop and get the van door open. Our four year old sat limp in his car seat. With all my planning for our mountain vacation, I wasn’t fast enough for …

It’s Not Often We’re Missed

Awhile back Facebook, in its infinite wisdom, recommended I reconnect with a friend I hadn’t heard from in quite some time. It turned out my friend’s family had experienced some tough times. When she thanked me for my prayers, her comment caught me off guard. She said, “It’s not often we’re missed.” My heart broke for my friend, not just because of her difficult circumstances, but because she seemed alone in her struggles. I was reminded of Philippians 2:4, “Each of you should look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others.” How important that …

Flying with Mom – Airline Travel with Kids

It’s dark and quiet as hundreds around me sleep, now that the small passenger in row 35 has given in. His mother looks relieved, but cautious, slumped under a blanket beside him. Airline travel with small children is not easy, but it can be done well. Before the flight attendant closed the overhead bins, the elderly lady in row 35 found a way to move far from the little wiggling person making demands before we even pulled away from the gate. Early indications showed it would be a long overnight flight with this half sized, yet powerful, passenger. His mom, …

Remembering

Today is Memorial Day. The day our country takes a break and celebrates. But often we forget what Memorial Day is about. Perhaps we as mothers need to remind our kids about our country’s past. We need to remember the whys behind our national holidays and pass on the whys and traditions to our kids. Here is how I talked to my kids about Memorial Day. “Why do we celebrate Memorial Day?” I asked my kids while we ate lunch. “To honor our presidents?” my nine-year-old asked. “No,” I shook my head, “but good guess.” “To celebrate Christmas,” my four-year-old …

Recipes from M.O.M.

A domestic diva, I’m not… so quick and easy is my favorite way to cook. Healthy is important too, but even healthy tastes better when it’s quick and easy. I’m all about Rachel Ray’s 30 Minute Meals but when cooking isn’t you’re thing and recipes don’t come easy, the term “concoction” seems to be what best describes the food situated on your plate. Today, I’m going to share with you a concoction that may be thrown together to make a one-dish meal but is definitely quick – definitely easy – and almost definitely healthy. You will notice by the flexibility …

A Mother’s Heart…An Intimate Moment with Mary

She stands at a distance. The sight before her pierces her heart as if thrust in by a javelin. Her puffy eyes sting with tears, blurring her vision. Deep sobs heave her chest as her heart pounds in agony. The crowd jostles her, oblivious to her obvious pain, a pain so deep that no mother on earth will ever feel again. What brings her to this gruesome sight? A mother’s love. My son, she cries. Her name is Mary and her son is being crucified. Naked, exposed. Blood trickles down His face from the open wounds in His head when …

Five Ways to Impact Your Children & Grandchildren with the Message of Easter

By Featured Guest: Kathy Howard   Rich memories of childhood Easters keep popping up in my mind. I can still feel the cold metal of the folding chair as I sat with my family in the church parking lot waiting for the first rays of the sun to make their appearance. And with the sun, the somber notes of “low in the grave He lay…” became the joyous thunder of “up from the grave He arose (He arose), with a mighty triumph o’er His foes.” After prayer and singing, everyone escaped the chilly air and enjoyed pancakes and sausage in …
