A School Time Prayer

Father God, as I place my kids in the care of their school I pray Your hand of safety and guidance surround them. Help them to develop a love for learning. May my kids be lights of encouragement to all the kids in their classes. Help them to treat others how they would want to be treated. May they point others to Your love and kindness. When they …

When Your Child’s Path Looks Bumpy

On the night before he began kindergarten, my youngest son, Joshua, announced he’d “rather go to jail” than go to school. His big brother mumbled something sarcastic about the prison bars in the principal’s office, while his sisters attempted to soothe Joshua’s anxieties by pointing out the perks of being a kindergartener. “Did you know that when you lose a tooth at school you get to bring it home in a tiny treasure box?” my daughter Hannah asked. Joshua grinned and poked his finger in his mouth to check for loose teeth. But when it was time to brush those …

Back to School!

Each year, when summer comes and school lets out, it makes me reflect on my childhood summers. You know…those summers that seemed to last forever? I think about all the wonderful days I experienced growing up. We all had so much fun. Forced to be outsiders, we actually got exercise by running around playing tag, kick ball, or roller skating. We circled the neighborhood subdivision on our bikes until dark and the bugs hit our teeth, or Mom rang the bell to come home. Our parents never worried about us. Because a high level of trust in one’s neighbor existed, …

Tips for Parents of Kindergartners

This week my twin girls start kindergarten. How did they get to be so big? Somehow, in five years my bubbly babies have grown into little girls. While this mama is a little sad, I’m also so excited to parent them through this new stage of life. While we are getting them ready to go back-to-school, I’m trying to be proactive with what to expect this year in both their development and school. I’ve asked a friend who does “Mommy School” with her five year old and our Preschool Minister at church for some tips on parenting kindergartners, and today …

Our Back to School Bible Verse

Back to school time is here.  Like Every Home, USA the first day of school is hectic, exciting, and often a little emotional. I admit I started to cry when Grace and Samuel drove away in our Chevy Suburban. It was the first time Paul and I didn’t escort them ourselves. Having teenagers makes their mode of transportation different, but it doesn’t change a mother’s heart. I want them to succeed. How do I make that happen? God’s word is always the best way to start. When my four were much younger, I’d make a point every morning to say …

Why It’s Okay to Fail

School is about to be back in session for us. I love getting back to routines and its happy effect on my family. We all really operate well with routines. It gives us a pattern every day–a constancy in our weeks. Summer is fun and free and loose. And we need that for our souls for sure–space to dream and read and be. But back to routine is really where we shine, as a family. Every year, and you may ask my kids, I set forth some goals for the new year.   One of those goals is to make breakfast every …

“Grown-Up Time Out”

Lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, … teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up … -Deuteronomy 11:18-20 We all have those proud mom moments when our children surprise us and make us look like the mom of the year. You know… that rare family dinner out where all of the kids display their best table manners with no whining or crying and they …

The One Word That Will Revolutionize Your School Year

It’s that time of year again. Every other commercial is advertising back-to-school sales, store aisles are packed with parents holding lists and mumbling to themselves, and kids are trying to figure out a great hiding spot where no one can find them and drag them away from their swimming pools, video games, and late-sleeping, warm beds.    It’s school time! I have always loved September, even when I was a kid and that meant my freedom would soon be over. September means the air will be a little more crisp, routine will return (because I am such a …
