Mom hugging son

Good mom, good wife?

Is being a good mom the same as being a good wife? From the time a child enters into a family, they can’t help but try to take over and secure their spot at the center of our world. At first, they seem so innocent and helpless, but their power to dominate slumbers like a morning nap under a mobile with a nursery rhyme. It may be years before a mom realizes that her precious children can unseat her husband’s unique place in her heart. If we aren’t careful, children can take the place of our mate. They are a …

My oldest child whined over her brother’s cries, “Mom, make him stop! I am trying to do my homework and I can’t concentrate.” I looked up from L’s reading homework and said, “I am sorry, he will calm down soon.” As I looked back at the book L arched her back and yelled, “It says, slet. slet. slet. slet.” I pointed to the word “set” and asked her to sound it …

One of Those Mornings

We had one of those mornings. . . The kind when emotions swing, tears flow, and reality crumbles your perfect family dream. Did I mention we had a guest too? I heard the lies start traipsing about my brain… “You can’t mother well.” “What would “they” think?” “You are a failure.” The toxic acid of these lies burned my already bruised heart. My eye began to twitch. Oh child, why is it so hard for you? I wonder. Her anger flashed again and I felt my anger rise, my eyes flash, and my body tremble. My words sounded strained – …

How In the World?

Whenever I meet someone new and they discover I have seven children, often there is a gasp and “How in the world do you do that?”   And then when they further discover, if time permits, that one of my children has a life-threatening illness, the question comes: “How do you cope with that?” I suppose I should first make the disclaimer that this was, and is,  a growing process for me. (Oh, and the photo above was on a very busy day serving at church. 😉 )  I didn’t have seven children all at once (Whew! Go septuplet Moms!) My …

It’s Not Often We’re Missed

Awhile back Facebook, in its infinite wisdom, recommended I reconnect with a friend I hadn’t heard from in quite some time. It turned out my friend’s family had experienced some tough times. When she thanked me for my prayers, her comment caught me off guard. She said, “It’s not often we’re missed.” My heart broke for my friend, not just because of her difficult circumstances, but because she seemed alone in her struggles. I was reminded of Philippians 2:4, “Each of you should look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others.” How important that …

Creating Problems in Your Mind

Being a quiet person doesn’t always have the best benefits. The absence of sound coming out of my mouth means that there is sometimes a lot of chatter going on in my head. I had to apologize to my oldest daughter for passing that ugly trait on! She told me, “NOW I see where I get it from! I over-think situations and start to become worried or doubtful.” Its sad to say that I’ve probably done her so much more damage than either one of us ever thought would happen! There is a tendency to over-process EVERYTHING. The next thing …
