Subscribe today and receive your FREE copy of… FACING OUR FEARS – 31 STORIES FROM M.O.M.     Would you like to be the parent every teacher hopes for? No matter the setting where your child receives education (traditional, co-op, library time, home), teachers appreciate parents with”partner hearts.” When I recall the many parents who were gifts to my classrooms, names like “Connie, Mayisa, Barb, Kathy, and Bill” come to mind. They made me a better teacher, and they made my classroom more effective. Their children loved having them there, and they were imprinted on my teacher-heart. It’s worth it …

The Perfect Fit

Subscribe for a FREE copy of… FACING OUR FEARS – 31 STORIES FROM M.O.M.                     First grade is a big year. One that may cause some anxiety in moms and in kids. For many kids it is the first full day away from home. For many moms it is the first time an adult and  non-family member will have such a great impact on the child. First grade can be a little scary.  During the spring and summer, I prayed for the perfect teacher: nurturing, compassionate, and encouraging. I did my …

The video camera was rolling and my husband was strategically positioned to catch close up photos. “You have to guess what it is before you can open it!” I said, handing Annemarie a simple gift bag. When the bag began ringing and vibrating, she almost dropped it in surprise. Shock and comprehension …

One of Those Mornings

We had one of those mornings. . . The kind when emotions swing, tears flow, and reality crumbles your perfect family dream. Did I mention we had a guest too? I heard the lies start traipsing about my brain… “You can’t mother well.” “What would “they” think?” “You are a failure.” The toxic acid of these lies burned my already bruised heart. My eye began to twitch. Oh child, why is it so hard for you? I wonder. Her anger flashed again and I felt my anger rise, my eyes flash, and my body tremble. My words sounded strained – …

Jennifer’s Story

FROM THE M.O.M. INITIATIVE: We’re blessed to have Jennifer Kindle share her story today. Many women have walked down the same path and they are very happy with their decision to limit the size of their family. Jennifer’s story isn’t intended to be a commentary or stance on permanent birth control but an opportunity for her to share her own story and for us to all think about the different decisions we’ve made that we too have regretted.   This is a story I’m hesitant to write, a story of conviction, forgiveness and grace. My story I could say, but …

A Mother’s Heart…The Smell of Freshly Sharpened Pencils

“It’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it!” (Eccl. 11:9a TLB)         Those of us in, ahem, our later years were deprived. Deprived? Yup. We didn’t have things like… air conditioning computers videos or DVDs chat rooms and social media big screen TVs (or color for that matter) games like Wii text messages iPods cell phones – ‘cause the only blackberries we had came out of grandmother’s garden! Forced to be outsiders, we actually got exercise by running around playing tag, kick ball, or roller skating. We circled the neighborhood subdivision on our bikes until …

When Our Children Are Afraid

The Boogeyman, the monsters under the bed and the hideous looking clown from a friend’s birthday party – they’re all so scary. Especially for a little mind that isn’t capable of distinguishing real from make believe. Most children struggle with fear at some point or another. They are afraid of the dark, afraid of insects, afraid or pets, afraid of their own shadows. Fear happens. And whether or not the object of their fear is real, the fear they feel is definitely real. Just as real as their momma’s fears. A couple weeks ago we released our first book. It’s …

How In the World?

Whenever I meet someone new and they discover I have seven children, often there is a gasp and “How in the world do you do that?”   And then when they further discover, if time permits, that one of my children has a life-threatening illness, the question comes: “How do you cope with that?” I suppose I should first make the disclaimer that this was, and is,  a growing process for me. (Oh, and the photo above was on a very busy day serving at church. 😉 )  I didn’t have seven children all at once (Whew! Go septuplet Moms!) My …
