Happy Mother’s Day from the Throne

“What do you really want for Mother’s Day?”my ten-year-old daughter, Lizzy, asked as I stashed the breakfast dishes in the dishwasher and scrubbed drizzles of spilled milk off the kitchen counter.  I glanced up at the clock, down at my ratty pajamas, and over my shoulder at the toddler who had just waddled into the room with a saggy diaper. Church would begin in ninety minutes, and chances were strong that we’d be late. Again. My husband was already at work, and two of my kids were out in the yard getting their church clothes dirty as I chased down …

How to Make More Out of Mother’s Day

They sat around the living room in various stages of brokenness and healing. Two women had arrived that week, and another one came that morning before I arrived. Some have stayed through low times, angry times, and desperate times. Some are barely recognizable when I think back to their first days at the women’s shelter. Chapel started, and I asked the group, “Why is Mother’s Day so hard?” Murmurs poured across the room with words like, “passed away, shame, failure, abortion, infertility, abandonment, disowned.” You won’t find these themes on Hallmark cards, but it’s the very real experience of many …

What is a Mom Worth?

If you’re a stay-at-home mom, what would you be paid, in today’s market, if you could actually be compensated for your services? Salary.com surveyed 6,000 moms for their 2013 (latest results) questionnaire. They wanted to find out the top ten most time-consuming jobs a mother performs. Applying their salary data to each household chore, they factored in the number of hours spent on each chore, and then estimated the possible annual salary. After calculating, they came up with the figures in these two infographics (used with permission): If you’d like to see how they calculate it, you can check it …

Mother’s Day: Happy or Hurting

“I hate Mother’s Day!” said my dear friend who is longing for a baby. “You know that women struggling with infertility don’t go to church on Mother’s Day.” Kris agrees, “I was that mom-in-waiting for 16 years; I stayed away from baby showers, church, and friends who would get pregnant. I didn’t stop praying, but it WAS the worse pain.” Lisa concurs, “I am guilty of having skipped church a few years before we adopted my son.” In my book, Dear God, Why Can’t I Have a Baby? A Companion Guide for Couples on the Infertility Journey, my own daughter …

See the BOID!

“My sister was carrying my daughter, Kim, down the hall of a hospital. Little Kim was looking back and saying, “See the boid!” (bird – she couldn’t yet say her Rs). Gail turned to see what bird could possibly be in the hospital, and there stood three nuns. Kim thought they were penguins.”* My friend, Sandra Chapman, shared this story in the “Laugh Out Loud” section of  The Plan A MOM in a Plan B World.     IT’S GOOD TO LAUGH, DON’T YOU THINK? I remember the day when my children, Taylor and Lauren, were little and the milk spilled …
