Thankful to be a Mom

Lord, Today I am thankful for my life as a mom.  It isn’t the life I planned. Proverbs 16:9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” You brought me a godly husband I don’t deserve. Psalm 1:1, Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked; nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.” You set aside my prayers for success & fame and gave me a houseful of children. Psalm 128:3, Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; …

‘Twas the Tuesday before Thanksgiving

…and all through the house, all the creatures went shopping, except for this mouse. So I sat and I listened to sounds of quiet cheer, and thanked God again for joy soon here. I’m supposed to be cleaning, but before I begin–I wanted to write this thankful note for both kith and kin. Those near and those far, I never forget–each face, through my memory, some I have never met. I stop for a moment and bend my knee, giving thanks for they’ve given so abundantly to me. A smile, a kind word or prayer and a gift–letting the dross …

How to Enjoy Weekends…

“MOOOOMMMMYYYYYYY!” his voice echoed down the hall. My eyes flew open and quickly snapped shut as the early morning sunlight met my retinas. I rolled over and grabbed my phone. Squinting I barely made out the time. 6:15 AM. I closed my eyes and rolled over…UGH…Doesn’t he know it is Saturday — the one morning a week we can sleep in? “MOOOOOOOMMMMMMYYYYY!” ____________________________ For over ten years now my weekends have not been my own. Little people wake up at hours I never planned on seeing daylight, they need food, and help with diapers or toilets…and when they are no …

Hula-Hooping Into 2013

Confession: I’m a multi-tasker who is tired of multi-tasking. (photo source: dailyhistory.net) Entering 2013, my eyes have barely focused on the future from the blur of 2012.  It was the year of the multi-tasking mamma, aka me (was it for you too?).  From planning a two year old tu-tu birthday party, putting our house up for sale, moving to our hometown, and leaving my stay-at-home job for church ministry, my days were filled juggling.  To mark the end of our crazy year, my husband and I ventured to the salty air and crashing waves in Florida to clear our heads …

When Thanksgiving Gets Stuck in Your Throat

Not everyone will have had a happy Thanksgiving…especially this year. Many are out of work, have issues relating to health, children, or family. Some are facing the holiday season for the first time as they mourn the loss of a loved one or as a divorcee. So, what happens to their thanksgiving and praise when their peace disintegrates into chaos? As I go through trial after trial, circumstance after circumstance, what happens to my praise and thanksgiving? What happens when my day is darkened with a multitude of problems? Do I still sing to Him anyway? You bet! When my …

Grow Your Gratitude: Happy Thanks-Living! & The M.O.M. Initiative Monday Link Up!

The Typical 2 I’ve always heard that there are two ways to focus on thankfulness: Keep track of what I’m thankful for (i.e. in a gratitude journal) Share my gratitude with those for whom I’m thankful (i.e. by writing a thank-you note)   A New (for Me) #3 But over the last month, I’ve discovered a new way — new for me, at least! — to focus on thankfulness. I’ve been asking people this question throughout the day: “What’s one thing you’re thankful for right now?” And I marvel at the diversity, the depth, the humor, and the honesty of each …

A Holiday-Ready Heart

Glorify the Giver (NOT the Gifted)

Intelligence Blake was by far the most intelligent student I’ve ever taught. His reading speed was dazzling. His memory was photographic. His grasp of concepts was both deep and divergent. Not surprisingly, he scored 5s on all his AP exams and was a National Merit scholar with a near-perfect SAT score. And yet, he was by far the most miserable student I’ve ever taught. Everything annoyed him. Everybody frustrated him. All class assignments were deemed “stupid.” Other students’ insights were “a waste of my time.” I watched Blake seethe under the loathsome requirement of sitting through my detestable AP English …
