A Mentor’s Role & How to Begin a M.O.M. Mentor Group

Throughout history, women have been the catalyst for change and made a huge impact on our society. I think that’s because moms mold the heart of the next generation and are world-changers and culture creators.

That’s why The M.O.M. Initiative focuses on mentoring moms.

You see, if we reach the moms of this generation, we will reach the children of the next generation. If we don’t, we will lose them all. And if only 3 women in 1/2 of the churches in the United States would mentor just 3 other moms, then that would translate into reaching a Million Moms for Christ and over 2.5 million children.

But we know mentoring can be awkward, so we make it super easy and do-able, and we do it together.  You’re not alone in this, sweet friend. We’re with you every step of the way.

The Making of a Mom was intentionally written as an in-reach and an outreach resource that would not only give practical help for moms but also would be a unique, all-in-one resource that could be used by mentors, ministry leaders & small group leaders.

The Making of a Mom makes mentoring easy and provides a solution to 3 things most ministry and small group leader struggle with…

  1. What will I say? (The questions at the end of each chapter serve as a catalyst for conversation.)
  2. What will I do? (The venue-specific planning guides in the back of the book provide the tools to mentor moms in your church, your home, and in your community.)
  3. What will I use? (The Making of a Mom is a dual-purpose book to reach moms who don’t know Christ and minister to those who do.)

The Making of a Mom was not only written so moms wouldn’t feel alone, but as a resource for the church so they wouldn’t have to be.

PLEASE NOTE: The Making of a Mom is the primary mentoring tool to get MOM Groups started, but once your MOM Groups are established, please continue your MOM Group by using other great resources available to mentor moms. The MOM Initiative has a team of women who have some GREAT MENTORING RESOURCES as well as a host of other authors who provide solid biblical material to help you continue into the next MOM Group semester. The easiest way to link hearts with us is to begin a M.O.M. GROUP in your area to help us reach a million moms for Christ through the power of missional mentoring. The  of The M.O.M. Initiative is to minister to the moms who know Christ and to reach those who don’t because we know that JESUS CHANGES EVERYTHING! And we are here to help you in your journey.

Here’s a brief look at what a mentoring ministry might look like for you:

  • Schedule a time and place to meet weekly for twelve weeks.
  • You and the mentee(s) will read through one short chapter and be prepared when you meet together each week.
  • As a mentor, you can rest in knowing, this biblically-based resource includes questions at the end of each story that are specifically designed to be a catalyst for conversation. This will give you, as a mentor, the confidence to know you won’t have to worry about that awkward silence that would normally leave you scrambling for something to say.
  • The questions are also written to help you, as a mentor, reflect on your own story and share your failures as well as your successes with the kind of sincere transparency that will assure your mentee that she is not alone and that her mentor isn’t Pinterest perfect either.
  • Your time together is a tool to nurture a relationship that will hopefully last long past the book.
  • IF POSSIBLE, BASED ON SKILLS, ABILITIES AND LOGISTICS, PLEASE INCORPORATE VARIOUS PRACTICAL LESSONS TO ADD DEPTH TO YOUR TIME WITH YOUR MENTEE(S). (such as: sewing, cooking, baking, organizing, budgeting, computer basics, creating a resume, etc…) If you do so, you could spend 30-40 minutes on the skill and 40-45 minutes walking through The Making of a Mom.

Need some ideas as to where you can become intentionally missional about mentoring?

Churches, para-minisitries, MOPS groups, MOMS Club International and individuals can use The Making of a Mom as a mentoring tool to not only mentor moms within the church, but to go beyond her four walls and minister to moms in low income apartment complexes, neighborhoods, crisis pregnancy centers, homeless shelters, juvenile shelters and wherever moms can be found.

A MENTOR’S ROLE

Mentors, sometimes intentionally – often unknowingly, plant seeds of wisdom in the hearts of others. They teach with their lives. They are natural nurturers. Their very existence causes us to consider our own existence and to ponder the path of our feet.

Mentors are heart shapers and life changers – not necessarilybecause they walk through a book with someone for a few weeks, but because they walk through life with someone for a season.

In a world where young women desperately need to experience Titus 2 in real life, mentors are often hard to find. Perhaps not because women are unwilling, but maybe because many feel unworthy, unqualified, unprepared and are just afraid to put themselves out there. Many shy away from the obvious maternal mandate because they lack the tools, the time or the support to feel like they can effectively mentor others.

In the grander scheme of things, we’re all mentors – and we’re all mentees. We’re all in a place where we are either influencing someone else or someone else is influencing us.

But what does it really take to be a Titus 2 type of mentor?

  • Mentors love God out loud. Their lives leave a fragrant aroma that gives evidence of their heart for God.
  • Mentors lend their experience. The experiences they have walked through become a treasure trove of tools that mentor the heart of others.
  • Mentors love others. They nurture those in need, they strengthen the weak, they uphold the weary and they love the unloveable. Their lover beckons them to want the best for others and to do what they can to help them in their journey.
What does a mentor do, anyway?
  • Mentors make themselves available. Often on the lookout for how they can pour some seed of encouragement into others and many times unintentionally, mentors are available to love on others.
  • Mentors see the best in others and do their best to bring it out. It’s easy to see people where they are, but mentors see people for where they can be and are willing to hold their hand through the journey from who they are to who they were created to be.
  • Mentors sacrifice to make a difference. It’s not always easy or convenient to foster mentor relationships with others, but mentors understand their calling may cost them something and they are willing to do it anyway.
  • Mentors are discerning. Mentors understand influence doesn’t always happen sitting at a table with a book in one hand and a pen in the other. They are able to discern when an ordinary circumstance becomes a real life teaching moment and they make the most of each one.
It’s not always easy to be a mentor but it’s what we are called to. So, will we rise up and become women who will serve the Lord in our generation and understand that we too were born for such a time as this? The next generation awaits our response and their faith hangs in the balance. As a mentor, we can change this world – one mom at a time.
Mentors make a difference. Will you?

The M.O.M. Initiative is a ministry that exists to help the body of Christ not only establish effective mentoring ministries within the four walls of the church, but to also make mentoring intentionally missional and to impact the community around them.
