Stop the Spin Cycle

Do you have those days (and I know you do) that you feel that you’re constantly spinning plates?!Our courses are not difficult at all…its just when each kid is working on a different level (math, lang. arts, etc) at the same time! I’m trying to answer this one’s questions while helping the other. Even if I give an older a reading assignment, he may be done before I’m finished helping a younger and I feel that I have to keep the older occupied with work so that they wont go wandering outside. Then its difficult to reign them ALL back in …

Brown Like Mom. Cream Like Dad.

“What color will you raise your children?” is a question that I’ve heard before. I didn’t know that there was such a thing as raising children a certain color.  I didn’t know that there was such a thing as raising children a certain color. Click To Tweet With that question, I knew full well that they were wondering how much of each culture we’ll embrace and teach to our children. I’m brown. My husband is cream…or in more common terms, I’m black. He’s white. My upbringing wasn’t about skin color.  It was about love, respect, honor and serving God. My …

Loving Local Food

To Market: Loving Local Food

Summer is a ripe opportunity to teach kids about loving local food. When it’s time to close the school books in our town, the farmers market opens.  With the open market comes lessons about diet and the quality of food we choose for a healthy lifestyle.  Moms can use the market as a classroom for a lifetime of wellness. During our family visits to our local farmers market, we’ve enjoyed a bounty of benefits. The obvious ones fit into my market basket, but others grow in the habits, understanding, and hearts of our kids. Market days show our kids that …

Becoming Momma K

I’m already “mom”.  Thanks to my daughter and son-in-love, I will be Momma K! The richness of the blessing of a grand son is beyond words in description. Often times words cannot convey what the heart feels. Conversation about how much we want to bless this little guy is regular between my husband and I. With sparkling eyes, the younger aunts and uncles make plans for play time with their nephew. I pray that God will bless me with a rich relationship with our grand son. Becoming Momma K is helping me become mom all over again. I’m seeing …

What Will You Be Known For

A great friend of mine  posted an Instagram picture with the quote,  “At Mom’s, I found a stack of soft flannel for sewing baby blankets. One of the many gifts she was known for. #missmom”   I started thinking about my own Momma and her living legacy and what she’s known for.   She is such a giver; creatively with her specialty of crocheted blankets, and with her words of encouraging in her special way.   She is a minister of the Word and imparts wisdom to those that will hear.   I’m so blessed to call her my Momma and …

When It Isn’t Always Pretty

I’ve stepped away from a few opportunities to write about raising teen and young adult daughters  because I felt that I wouldn’t be writing from a position of strength and victory. There are the privileged few that have the “insider track” on what goes on behind the scenes. The prayers from faithful friends that are being prayed over our every day life. We deal with heartache, a heart that is still mending, struggles with singleness, anger, indecisiveness,  situations that could be life-threatening. This is what I want to show you…the realness of a MOM; a Mentor Mom. You see, it’s …

Creating Problems in Your Mind

Being a quiet person doesn’t always have the best benefits. The absence of sound coming out of my mouth means that there is sometimes a lot of chatter going on in my head. I had to apologize to my oldest daughter for passing that ugly trait on! She told me, “NOW I see where I get it from! I over-think situations and start to become worried or doubtful.” Its sad to say that I’ve probably done her so much more damage than either one of us ever thought would happen! There is a tendency to over-process EVERYTHING. The next thing …

Breath of Life

Set guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3 If you know that hurtful words spoken to your husband, child(ren), friends, family…or anyone, for that matter, negatively affect them… Guess what… YOUR OWN HURTFUL, NEGATIVE WORDS TO/ABOUT YOURSELF AFFECT YOU TOO! I hear too many of my sisters talk down about themselves. Speaking too lightly about God’s anointing on their lives. Thinking that what they do on a daily basis is too small for anyone to notice. God has placed so much value on your life. He wants you to value what …

Nurture Your Marriage ~ Take a Break

Why in the world would a marriage post have the title, “Take a Break”? Take a break with each other. There are times that I need to take a breather; a time of refreshing, to get myself together. There are also those times that taking a break with my husband gives me a chance to possibly gain a new outlook on something that I’ve been rolling over in my mind. This wouldn’t be possible if I had children in my ear also. I try to find unique and creative ways to spend time alone with my husband. My children are …

She Calls Me Friend

“Come on in and have a seat. Let me pour you a cup of this! Let’s chat.” What woman doesn’t enjoy those words; either from another woman that she just met or one that’s been a friend for a while? How many of us long for such an exchange? THAT is friendship at its best. That is what enriches our souls as women. I know that God is my ultimate source of unconditional comfort, but He also put in us a desire for companionship here on earth. It seems at times that it’s the most difficult to find and cultivate those …
