Praying Paint

Spread the love

Yes, you read that right!  Sometimes local language and geographical accents collide to create a wonderful and beautiful, albeit confusing, story. We had just moved to the beautiful Rocky Mountain foothills of Colorado from the Piney Woods of East Texas. And this is how our story unfolded…

As school began that fall, our oldest daughter, Kylie, was beginning kindergarten.  On the second day of school, I had this discussion with her about some school supplies she was still lacking.. This is what I heard:

Kylie: Mom, I need some praying paint.
Me: You do? Why?
Kylie: For school…my teacher says I need praying paint.

I pause a moment and consider where the source of praying paint might come from…Heaven, perhaps? Lord knows, I pray enough when our children begin to paint.

In fact, when Noah was four, he designed a wonderful painting on the wall behind his bedroom door. I considered writing “Noah’s Art” on it and leaving it at that, but decided that it might encourage him to paint more walls behind doors. Back to the story…

Me: Kylie, do you have a supply list with praying paint on it?
Kylie: Yes Mom, here it is.

I read it and sure enough it said, “Prang paint.

Well, how else could it be pronounced, especially when you are from the south!

So as school begins this year, write these kinds of stories down! For this very story is a vault one from eleven years ago–and that little girl is beginning her junior year in high school. That little painting boy is heading off to his first year of college!

Time can indeed slow down, if we take the time to record some of the more special and funny, even hard moments. It creates an imprint on our hearts and minds, as well, to see the wonderful ways God has made us all…not to mention, it gives us something fun to share with them later!

What special stories do you have to share about your kids and back-to-school? What moments can you use to teach them about praying?
