“…the books read and the philosophies absorbed in one’s teens and twenties erupt with a delayed effect, exerting redoubled influence in one’s middle years.” -Ravi Zacharias*freedigitalphotos.net

From the thick, bite-marked board books of yesterday to the tattered worn pages of chemistry and algebra books tossed on the table today…each book has taken its turn shaping my children.

As we witness our older children’s youthful journey coming to an end and their life as teens beginning to bloom, what should we encourage them to read?

Here are the top ten teen must reads, each with a high view of Scripture, to encourage your teens to live a life for God’s glory:

  • Rare: A Young Woman who Fears the Lord by Yvonne Hanson is highly recommended reading for all young ladies and is an excellent resource for young men to see what qualities he should seek in a wife. Contact Grace Community Church at (865) 984-0116 as well to order a copy.
  • The Joy of Fearing God by Jerry Bridges. The Bible admonishes us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” Psalm 111:10 ESV. What exactly does the phrase “fearing God” mean? How can our children become Biblically wise? This book is recommended for older teens or advanced readers, and gives questions at the end of the chapters for deeper study.
  • Trusting God: Even when Life Hurts by Jerry Bridges. As adults, many of us know the pain that life holds, but may not have been prepared in our faith. This book is an excellent resource to equip our young people with the knowledge of God’s Sovereignty before any devastation of life hits.
  • Growing Up Christian by Karl Graustein with Mark Jacobsen deals with children who have been surrounded by the Word of God their entire life. Do our children have a personal relationship with Christ or are they just doing what Dad and Mom expect of them?
  • The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom shares how the Lord uses ordinary people for His extraordinary purposes. This book also teaches how, “No matter how dark the pit, the love of God is deeper still.” This is the true story of the Ten Boom family enduring the horrors of a concentration camp during the Nazi invasion of WWII.
  • Big Truths for Young Hearts by Bruce Ware is the BEST book to introduce young people and old to the wonderful world of systematic theology! We use this around our dinner table to learn about God, the Trinity, the Church, salvation, etc.
  • My Heart in His Hands by Sharon James is a wonderful biography of one of America’s first overseas missionaries. We meet Ann Judson as a teenager as she wrestles with worldly pleasures and amusements but put all the entertainment away to follow Christ. What an adventure the Savior takes her on!
  • Fox’s Book of Martyrs updated by William Byron Forbush exposes our young men and women to those who have gone on before and given their lives for the love of the Savior.
  • Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss takes a wonderful look into the heart and mind of a young woman as she struggles growing up and her redemption by Christ. This book follows her throughout her life as she experiences joys and sorrows and attempts to live a life pleasing to her Savior.
  • Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle is a must read for all young men! This is a very practical tool for a father to do as a Bible study with his son.

What books are you encouraging your teens to read?  How have books read in your teens shaped the person you’ve become?

Praising Him through my pen,
