Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places

Spread the love

Valentine’s Day. It can be a mix up of emotions for many of us, especially if we end up looking for love in all the wrong places. You know, the love we read about in romance novels or on the Hallmark channel.

Let’s face it, we’ve bought into the hype that Valentine’s day is the one day of the year that we go over the top to show our love for that special someone in our life. You know how it goes, it’s the day where we spend more than we should and stress about getting everything “just right”.

For some it works out like they’ve always dreamed it would, but for most people it turns into a day of feeling a bit of a let down or even that we are not enough…not enough to be noticed, doted on, appreciated, loved, or anything else you can think of to fill in the blanks. As a matter of fact, for quite a few people Valentine’s Day is another day to be reminded that they are alone when the rest of the world is in the la-la-land of love.

Oh, I can almost hear you now, but trust me on this, I’m not a bah-humbug, love stinks kinda girl at all. As a matter of fact I’m probably the person the Hallmark channel actually markets to– I love a good clean sappy chick flick and cry at all of the commercials around the holidays, just ask my husband, he buys the Kleenex.

Why do we love it so much? I guess a lot of us can remember what it’s like to be the awkward teenage girl that dreamed of Prince Charming riding up on his white horse and whisking us away from all our troubles.

Unfortunately, the reality is, that no man on earth will take away our troubles. He can’t do it and he’s not supposed to either.

You and I, sweet sister, were made with a God sized hole in our heart that only He can fill. No man, chocolates or flowers will fill that void. We were created to love, and be loved, but our first love is and should be the love of Christ.

We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19 ESV

We love because we are loved.

Sounds simple, I know, and it’s not always easy to process, I get that.

In the middle of our days as women, wives, moms, or whatever hat we might be wearing in this season of our lives it’s so important for us to remember that our first love, our real true first love, is the love that our Heavenly Father gives us each day.

Did you know that the Bible talks about love 684 times?

That is a whole lotta loving!

Kinda makes me think that there’s more to love than just going all out on Valentine’s Day, don’t you think?

This Valentine’s Day instead of feeling like you’re not enough, or that your day wasn’t over the top special enough, let’s decide to rest in the love of our Savior first. Let’s look for our love in the right place…from Him. Then the pressure is off the men (or man cubs) in your life to fill the void that only God can fill.

That way we can let go of all the expectations we might have for the “perfect Valentine’s Day” and just let love lead the way!
