Chaotic Joy: Finding Abundance in the Messiness of Motherhood

Spread the love

I’ll admit that when I first began to consider the concept of abundant life for moms, I wondered whether it was even truly possible.  Abundant diapers, check.  Abundant discipline issues and baths and carpools, check.  Yes, these things are abundant in a mom’s life.  But was this all Jesus meant when He said He came in order that we might have abundant life (see John 10:10)?

The answer, of course, is no!

Jesus meant just what we think He meant: It’s possible for everyone to have abundant life—even a mom who’s up to her waist in piles of laundry.  That’s because abundant life consists not in perfect or even pleasing circumstances, but in knowing God.  And that’s possible for every mom, because motherhood provides us with ample opportunities to know God.

For example, have you ever thought about how many opportunities we as moms have to worship God?  True, we might not have a solid hour to spend with Him each day in devotional time.  But that doesn’t mean we don’t have time to worship Him.  Every single thing we do for our children can be offered to Him as an act of worship.  When preparing a meal, we can offer that preparation to the Lord.  When doing laundry or driving a carpool, we can do it “as unto the Lord”.  And when we do it that way, we’ve worshipped!

Or have you ever thought about how the times of silence we desire can bring us closer to God’s heart?  If you’re like me, silence in your home is at a premium.  But even the busiest of us can take a few moments to remain silent and pray instead of talking.  Or what about silencing media time?  Doing that allows us to have more time to connect with God, spirit to Spirit.

These are only a few examples of all the opportunities motherhood offers us to draw closer to God’s heart.  And when we do that—when we get to know Him and spend intimate time with Him—we live abundantly.

Even if that laundry still isn’t done.

Are you living the abundant life Jesus died to give you…even in the messiness of motherhood?
