Living with Hands Wide Open

Spread the love

My chest tightens as electricity shoots through my neck into my shoulders. My heart beat races and my left eye twitches.

I’m messing them up, my mind races ahead twenty years. They will be in therapy because I…I can’t do this.

I see them in my mind’s eye, twenty years older, telling their counselors how much they hate me.

My eye twitches faster. I take a deep breath and rub my temples. If only I could…

But there is no time.

“MOM! She stuck her tongue out at me,” one precious child bellows.

“He kicked me!” another retorts.

And the pressure inside me builds as I cling tight to my plans for the day. Motherhood was never this hard in my dreams.

Clinging to my dreams, my plans, my way increases the pressure inside until I want to explode in anger.

 Hands Wide Open

But there is something freeing when I open up my hands and let God. When I lay my burden down at the feet of Jesus and quit trying to mother by myself, suddenly the world, their worlds, are not on my shoulders. The pressure escapes through my open palms because Jesus says His burden is easy and His load is light. And with the open palms of a beggar who needs a handout to survive I am able to thrive because God fills my empty palms with Himself. His Spirit guides me, gives me wisdom, fills me with peace, and grows the fruit of patience and joy in me.

How do you live with your hands open to God’s plan instead of clinging to your plans, hopes, and dreams?
