Communication

Communication: the power of a text

Spread the love

I’ve never written a message to my kids on a cave wall. They wouldn’t look there, because communication changes. When my kids were little, one of their favorite ways to practice spelling was painting in shaving cream. Now kids click and drag on iPads and use apps to reinforce language development. Shaving cream is still a great way to practice, but if we want to be heard, “flexible” and “learner” have to be our middle names when it comes to communication.

The digital age has thrust moms and grandmas onto a fast track for adaptation in communicating with our kids. We have to understand where our kids are listening. It’s good to know some things never change.

Communication wisdom from Proverbs

  1. Children still need to listen to their parents’ teaching. (Prov. 1:8)
  2. Children tend to forget what they’ve heard. (Prov. 3:1)
  3. Children need to attend to a parent’s instruction to gain insight. (Prov. 4:1)
  4. Children who accept what they hear will have blessed lives.  (Prov. 4:10)
  5. Children who listen are wise. (Prov. 13:1)
  6. Children who stop listening stray. (Prov. 19:27)
  7. God listens to those who seek Him. (Prov. 15:29)

A mom’s goal in changing times

But other than God’s truth, everything changes. Today many children hold a communication device in the palm of their hand. Many communication tools make parental awareness and accountability difficult. When our kids plug in to today’s communication, they enter a big world we often can’t supervise completely. Our goal isn’t to effectively police every conversation, search, message, or image, but to shepherd the hearts of our children. “My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments,” (Proverbs 3:1).

The future of technology doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Communication with our kids will look different in every coming season of their lives and ours, but don’t give up. Their  hearts need to hear from us, mamas. Are you flexible? Are you committed to being a learner?

The power of a text

This could be the time you make the most of the power of a text. Where once you relied on a phone call, a hand written message, or a face to face exchange, today you might tap into the power of a text. You may share a scripture, prayer, word of encouragement, caution, praise, or reminder in a private text message or message to their inbox.

Where do your kids look for their messages?

Find out where they’re looking and reading and LISTENING and be there. Kids still need to hear from their moms. With all of the communication swirling around them, maybe they need to hear from us more than ever before. It’s crucial that we flex, so their hearts will hear and know and desire to keep God’s commandments.  Your kids will be listening to the messages around them this week. Where will they go to listen? They need to hear from YOU.

Find out where they’re listening and be there.
