Teen Sues Parents

 IT’S A PARENT’S NIGHTMARE

  • A child with a terminal illness.
  • A child die in a car accident.
  • A child get on drugs.
  • A child be kidnapped.

How would you complete the sentence, “It would be a nightmare for my child to______________________”

Although there are several ways we might complete the above sentence, none of us would end it with “sue me.”

YET IT HAPPENED.

A high school senior filed suit against her mother and father for financial support and college tuition. The teen’s justification?  “(They) should be required to provide for my support and education until I can stand on my own two feet. In order to do this, I had to take legal action.”*

Her mother claims that her daughter was never forced out of the family’s home, but rather “took it upon herself to run away so that she could live her life without any parental supervision and without any rules.”**

While many are “weighing in” on what this distraught family is experiencing,

perhaps it would be more constructive for us to “weigh in” on our own families.

Which of the following is both of comfort to you AND instructive of how to parent as God parents us?

  • God, as a loving Father, is patient toward us. 2 Peter 3:9
  • God disciplines us so that we can share His holiness. Hebrews 12:10
  • As God instructs us “in the way we should walk;” we are to instruct our children in God’s ways so they will walk in them. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
  • As Christ modeled obedience and pleasing His Father, we are to model to our children obedience and pleasing God. John 8:29
  • We are to talk to our children about God in the natural course of our day. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
  • We are to pray for our children as Christ prayed for us; aware that Satan prowls like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.  John 17:15-17, 1 Peter 5:8

Heavenly Father, thank You that You have not called me to judge other parents and children. Rather, You exhort me to examine how I parent. Help me increasingly raise my children to look to You and walk in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Look over the above list. In what way might you more intentionally parent your kids as God parents you?
