Woman Reveals Herself

Spread the love

no-maskI admit it, I was going for a shocker headline!

The shocker of this headline is that it is true, but there is no bare skin involved whatsoever! The revealing I am referencing is much more scary than that. This woman has learned to reveal herself, her true self, to a trusted few and I have found that through that revealing lies healing.

I actually reveal myself monthly, sometimes bi-monthly. Yeah, during book club – that after several years has become so much more than “book club.” Our husbands even refer to it as “bookless club” because there have been times when there was zero book discussion.  That does not mean we haven’t shared, instead we have been doing some revealing.

Time and trust has led us to show vulnerability and a willingness to share with each other in a much deeper way.  Revealing our inner selves and how we have been made to think, feel and be.  Pulling from our childhood experiences, educations, work experience, relationships, family dynamics, personal valleys and mountaintops – each of which makes us the unique and complicated women that we see in the mirror each day.

I confess that as I look in the mirror, I wonder if the reflection others see reveals who I am on the inside or am I wearing my protective mask. The mask I put on for the world is a safer way to “do life” with it’s secure layer of protection.  I am guilty of needing that protective layer more times than I care to admit.  But how sweet it is on book club day, with this group of dear friends…the mask lay tossed on the floor…unneeded for these relaxed and revealing conversations.

It’s creating a new sense of wonder in me how the masks of each of my friends, so safely affixed each morning, have slowly and steadily been stripped away each month during book club.

Yes, we see each other’s “uglies” as I dubbed them, but somehow seeing those uglies compels each of us to reveal our true, yet broken, beauty.  Subsequently making the mask seem unnecessary and frivolous.

Growing in relationship is sweet. But relationship comes at a price – you must reveal yourself. I hope today you will take a bold step, take off your mask and choose a trusted friend or mentor to reveal yourself to today.

QUESTION: DO YOU STRUGGLE WITH HIDING WHO YOU REALLY ARE FROM THE WORLD? DO YOU HAVE A FRIEND OR A GROUP OF FRIENDS WHERE YOU CAN JUST BE YOURSELF?
