radical well being coverThe M.O.M. Initiative is a ministry devoted to helping moms be the best moms they can be. But sometimes, our emotional, physical and spiritual condition can prevent us from being the best “us” we can be.

Today, we are blessed to have a special guest. Dr. Rita Hancock is not only a physician, but a woman whose own personal journey will help you understand why many of our health problems revert back to the choices we make and how we can break free from those things which are not only making our lives difficult, but are often destructive.

NOW, please enjoy our interview with our special guest, Dr. Rita Hancock!

Dr. Rita, tell us about your book!

Radical Well-being—A Biblical Guide to Overcoming Pain, Illness, and Addictions is about how emotional and spiritual stressors can affect your physical health and even cause you to fall into compulsive behaviors like overeating, consuming drugs and alcohol, etc. In my book, I tell stories about patients who have broken free from these problems by addressing issues like (1) unforgiveness toward people who hurt them in the past; (2) lies that they internalized about themselves when they were children; and (3) areas of sin that they were refusing to acknowledge.

What motivated you to write Radical Well-being?

Mostly, I’m motivated by all those patients I see who have physical pain in spite of negative x-rays, MRIs, and blood tests. Often, patients with negative imaging studies have alignment issues or knots in their muscles (I talk more about these commonly missed pain problems in my book—including how to find a doctor in your area who can treat you). But, sometimes, even with my additional skills, I STILL couldn’t help certain patients. I found this to be frustrating. Eventually, as I matured in my faith and as I matured as a physician, I got gutsier and started asking patients about past emotional traumas and even spiritual issues. It turned out that getting my patients to talk about the issues of their lives helped them get better way faster. I figured if my patients benefitted and found pain relief that way, maybe others needed to hear about this, too.

By chance, did you weave any parts of your own story into your book?

I did. Throughout my life, I struggled with weight problems and childhood-onset obesity. As a child of Italian immigrants, I grew up practically worshipping food. I ate gigantic portions when I wasn’t even hungry, especially when I was nervous. It’s no surprise that I weighed 207 pounds by the time I was 17 years old. Thankfully, before I left for Cornell, I lost 75 of those extra pounds. But, then, I went on to develop a compulsive eating disorder. It was how I dealt with the pressure of the rigorous pre-med curriculum. Thankfully, my story has a happy ending, as I learned to eat according to physical rather than emotional hunger. You can read more about my journey in my Christian weight loss book, The Eden Diet. In fact, I’m giving an electronic version of the book away for free to one of your readers this month!

What do you hope your readers will get from your books and why?

I want readers to become healthy in mind, body, and spirit! My first book, The Eden Diet, was about losing weight by using hunger pangs as a compass for when and how much to eat. My second book, Radical Well-being, the book that’s being released on January 8th, 2013, takes your healing to the next level. It practically hands emotional and spiritual healing to you on a silver platter. Not only does emotional peace facilitate weight loss by reducing your urges to stress-eat, it also reduces the severity of your physical pain problems and stress-induced illnesses like fibromyalgia, migraines, spinal pain, IBS, TMJ pain, pelvic pain, depression, anxiety, and others.

Great! Now, how can our readers find you and your books?

They can visit my websites: www.TheEdenDiet.com for the diet book and www.RadicalWell-being.com for the emotional healing book. You can buy the books through those websites or via any bookstore in your area. rita-bookcaseposeAs a board-certified physician in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Management, Dr. Rita Hancock specializes in helping her patients achieve optimal function in spite of their arthritic, painful joints. One way she does this is by helping them lose weight. Dr. Rita has not only Ivy League training in nutrition and the psychology of obesity, but she also speaks from personal experience. She personally overcame a compulsive eating disorder and lost 75 pounds and kept it off for for over 27 years.

Since true health requires wellness in three dimensions: mind, body, and spirit, Dr. Rita also counsels her patients in regard to their emotional and spiritual well-being. This approach has allowed her to get to the root of otherwise unexplained pain and/or stress-induced illness in a large number of patients.
