WHEN YOUR HEART HURTS

Spread the love

Has your heart ever “hurt”?

Perhaps it hurt for someone who was going through a difficult time. Or, your heart may have ached to the point you thought you were going to die because of what someone did to you; or you unintentionally did to someone.

Have you ever noticed that no one can heal your hurting heart? As a matter of fact, sometimes it’s even a puzzle to you why your heart hurts. Things can seem to be in place. Things can appear okay, but deep down, you know they aren’t.  As hard as you try to put on a happy face or be thankful, you still feel like you’re falling apart.

What do you do when you have a hurting heart?

May I suggest the following that has helped me through many years of being a wife, mama, and now Mimi?

Put Your Heart in God’s Hand

Many times we don’t understand the root cause of our hurting heart. We may look at surface issues and say, “If only….. then I’d be happy; things would be okay.”  But would they really be okay? Would we really be happy?

When we go to God in prayer, we’re admitting we need help. When we kneel before our Heavenly Father, it’s like we’re climbing into the lap of the King of kings. He’s sovereign. He sees all things and knows all things. But most of all, if we have confessed our sins and called on Jesus to be our Savior and Lord, then God is also our Abba Daddy. He cares about us. He wants to help our broken heart.

Sometimes We Hear Things We Don’t Want to Hear

Sometimes, when we crawl in God’s lap in prayer, we hear, “There is nothing you can do to change the situation.”  My friend, Pam Kanaly, shared in my book, The Plan A MOM in a Plan B World, how her heart ached when her husband left her and their two young children. She couldn’t change his heart or bring him back. But, in God’s lap she found hope and assurance that her Heavenly Father would be with her and watch over her children. He gave her perspective for how He would one day use her hurt to help others. (2 Corinthians 1:3-5) Other times our broken heart is due to a loved one dying. We can’t bring the person back, but we can find healing in God’s arms.

Sometimes Our Hurting Heart is the Consequence of Our Actions or Words

If we’re to be honest, our hearts may sometimes hurt because of rifts in relationships of which we’re partly responsible. We may have lashed out and said words we can’t take back. We may have been the one that had an affair. We may have overspent and can’t pay the bills. We may wrongly compare our children to others instead of loving them for who they are. In each of these times, we need to crawl into our heavenly Father’s lap. If we have wronged another, we need to say, “I’m sorry” from the depths of our hearts. But we also need to tell God we’re sorry.

There is Help for the Brokenhearted in Jesus’ Arms

If your heart is hurting today, why not go to God?  Kneel.  Pray, “God, show me why my heart is hurting. If I have any ownership in why it hurts by harsh words I’ve said, by being unfaithful to You or my spouse, by caring more about what others think than what You think, by spending beyond my means and withholding from You; then Lord, forgive me. I repent and ask You to help me live as You want me to live. Give me Your perspective, strength, and insight. Heal my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

There is help for the hurting heart. And the healing begins when we put Jesus in the center of our hearts.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
